Forecasting Formulas: EAC, ETC, VAC, and TCPI

  • EAC = BAC / CPI: use when the current cost performance is expected to continue for the rest of the project.

TCPI looks intimidating until you ask the human question: how efficiently must we perform from this point forward to make the target? A result above 1.00 means the team needs to do better than dollar-for-dollar efficiency. If the target has been revised, the denominator uses EAC - AC instead.

PERT, standard deviation, and variance

For a three-point estimate, PERT = (O + 4M + P) / 6, where O is optimistic, M is most likely, and P is pessimistic. The most likely estimate gets four times the weight. BAC is $200,000, AC is $90,000, and EV is $75,000. The prompt says the current cost trend is expected to continue. First, CPI = 75,000 / 90,000 = 0.833. That wording points to EAC = BAC / CPI, so $200,000 / 0.833 is about $240,000. The project forecasts an overrun of roughly $40,000.

3. How many communication channels?

A project adds two people to an eight-person group. The new total is 10, not eight. Channels = 10(10 - 1) / 2 = 45. The tempting wrong answer comes from forgetting the new members. These small wording details are often the entire question.

How to Memorize Formulas Without Cramming
